SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
23rd Sunday in Ordinary
Time
September 5, 2010
Let all who
enter enjoy the fellowship of friends until the bells call us to worship. Let us then, in oneness of spirit, turn our reverent
attention to the worship of God.
The
following prayer may be used to prepare yourself for
worship.
On Vocation – “Neither the hair shirt nor the soft berth will do. The place God calls you to is
the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”
-
Rev.
Frederick Buechner, Wishful Thinking, A Theological ABC.

*CALL
TO WORSHIP
Come to our houses Lord Jesus
To the tables where we eat and the places where we argue,
To the rooms where we
sleep or lie awake, wondering if our
life
is worthwhile.
Come
to our houses Lord Jesus
To broaden our hospitality and deepen our conversation
and
keep our souls company.
Come to our houses of prayer, to
save our churches from being so
caught up in
maintenance,
That our plans crowd out your mission and promise
of renewal.
And come to this place as week by
week we meet,
Show us the cross we must carry to be shaped by
your love.

*ADMITTING OUR BROKENNESS
Merciful
God, we are hungry, yet we fill ourselves with junk food. We allow entertainment to distract us from
our God-given work of service and
praise. Forgive us for seeking far more
from you than we are willing to give
in return. Help us instead to risk
everything as we labor in your vineyard
and care for the world. In Jesus’ name
we pray, Amen.

PEACE

A
LITANY OF LABOR Laboring
God, you formed us from dust, breathed life into us, and gave us purposeful work
to do. Through our work, we become co-creators with you and your son Jesus. For
blessing us by our labor:
We give you thanks, O Lord.
For
farm workers, for steelworkers and machinists; for those who work with their
hands and those who move the earth:
We give you thanks, O Lord.
For
those who tend the sick and those who seek new cures; for doctors and nurses,
for scientists and technicians;
We give you thanks, O Lord.
For
those who think and create; for inventors and explorers, for artists and
musicians; for those who tell stories in word and song and film:
We give you thanks, O Lord.
For
those who work in offices and warehouses; for administrators and receptionists,
for stockers and bookkeepers;
We give you thanks, O Lord.
For
those who inspire our minds and motivate us; for teachers, and public servants;
those who help the poor and those who work with our children:
We give you thanks, O Lord.
For
janitors and maids who bring order to our homes, schools, and churches, for sanitation
workers who keep our streets clean;
We give you thanks, O Lord.
For
those who sail the waves and fly the skies; for flight attendants and baggage
handlers; for those who chart and those who navigate:
We give you thanks, O Lord.
For
those whose labor is unpaid and often unseen, for those raising children and
volunteers in church and community.
We give you thanks, O Lord.
Look
kindly upon the unemployed and the disabled, the sick and the grieving. In your
wisdom and purpose, help us to guide and govern our world. Give all people work that builds human dignity
and bonds us to one another. Give us
pride in our work, a fair return for our labor, and joy in knowing that our
work finds its source in you; through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen

We
invite anyone who wishes to consider membership in this church to contact the
pastor or a member of the session. You may
also indicate interest in membership by checking the appropriate column in the
ritual of friendship booklet. Membership
in this church is a step made by profession of faith, reaffirmation of faith or
transfer of church letter.
Please
consider a contribution this morning to the Deacon’s Fund, which aids the Board
of Deacons in their ministry of care and compassion. One of their ongoing projects is support of
Norman Mission Ministries ($100 per month) as it provides utilities assistance
to people. Contributions to this fund may be made at any time, but the session
has designated each month’s Communion Sunday as a time when the congregation
will be specifically invited to contribute to this fund. Please make your contribution by marking
“Deacon” on the offering envelope.
